Seminar
SoSe 20: Social problems and social movements
Mihai Varga
Comments
The seminar familiarizes students with the sociology of social problems and helps them develop research interests and questions by studying social phenomena from their emergence as socially constituted problems all the way to their translation into the life and activities of social movements. The main social problem we will focus on is the weakness of "civil society" in post-communist Europe. Approaching civil society from the perspective of social problems and social movement theory, the seminar helps contextualize and explain the weakness of civil society’s liberal component. Cases to be discussed in class include: the NGO-sector and the international “democratization industry”, the role of intellectual “dissidents”, Solidarnosc in Poland, “cultural” movements – both conservative (in Poland) and anarchist (Voina, in Russia), far-right movements in Russia and Poland, the Euromaidan in Ukraine, far-right movements. close
