ONLINE COURSE. How to convey to others the sensation of pain? Of living with chronic illness? What role do diseases like tuberculosis or cancer play in cultural consciousness? How to express the sense of both invisibility and hypervisibility experienced if one’s body does not, or no longer conforms to what is considered society’s norm? And what can we learn from literature about living in times of pandemic? Building on readings by Susan Sontag, Audre Lorde, Simone de Beauvoir, Elaine Scarry, Michel Foucault, Virginia Woolf, Antonin Artaud, and Rosemarie Garland Thomson, as well as examples from (and beyond) American literature, these are some of the questions we will explore in this course.
The seminar will be taught following a guided-reading format.
