ONLINE COURSE - For the most part, post-WW II economic research has been about the mechanics of resource production and distribution. Politics, in the sense of how societies make decisions over these resources, has been largely ignored by economists. This course is an introduction to the political economy field which strives to overcome divisions in the social sciences. We will explore the role of politics in the working of markets – voters, coalitions and interest groups, bureaucracy and regulation all influence who gets what in an economy. Economic activity is also embedded in institutions, both formal – laws and contracts and informal norms and conventions. Finally, cultural values and beliefs affect people’s expectations of returns from their behavior, translating into different economic order choices and paths of growth. close
