Comments
This course introduces linguistic research that puts special emphasis on the social aspects of language and studies British and US American varieties of English in various social contexts. The focus of the seminar is on both the relationship between the English language and society, as well as the various functions of language in society. In terms of methods, the course employs corpus linguistics and other related observational methods, showing how language corpora can be used gainfully in order to aid sociolinguistic research by describing synchronic, diachronic and register variations. The course thus enables students to carry out their own empirical projects on the topic of their choice, using data derived from authentic language material.
Course Requirements include regular attendance and active participation (oral presentation, participation in class activities, quizzes).
