Comments
This seminar introduces selected paradigmatic motifs and themes in East Asian visual culture, with focus laid on the medium of painting and topoi stemming from Chinese literary classics from the 2nd to the 12th century. Topics to be handled include, among others, “the Xiao and Xiang rivers”, “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove”, “Peach Blossom Spring”, “Returning Home”, “Red Cliff”, “fisherman”, and the West Lake. Exemplary works from China, Japan and Korea representing and interpreting those themes will be shown and discussed. Participants of the seminar are expected to learn and obtain a thorough understanding of the literary works and cultural images (with the aid of translation), before going into detailed visual and contextual analysis of the pictorial representations. Syllabus and bibliography will be announced at the first meeting. close
