ONLINE COURSE ----- This course provides an introduction to visual studies as a qualitative empirical method in the social sciences. Its focus will be documentary photography and the wide spectrum of its uses and techniques. We will cover seminal examples – of both, historical and contemporary approaches. The course does provide the opportunity to reflect on the specific character of visual data – images – and their relevance in society. We intend to include practical lessons in this course – concentrating on both, the procuring of our own and the mining resources of already existing visual data. Introductory reading: Prosser, Jon (editor), Image-based Research. A Sourcebook for Qualitative Researchers, London: Routledge/Falmer 2001
