ONLINE COURSE.This seminar is focused on the lasting impact the Puritans had on American literature. We will begin by exploring the Puritan worldview, and various forms of Puritan writing such as the personal narrative, captivity narrative, sermon, and writings linked to the Salem Witch Trials. The remainder of the course is then dedicated to tracing the Puritan image and influence in American literary history, from the early nineteenth century to the present. For this, we will read a broad selection of works, by authors including Catharine Sedgwick, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Arthur Miller, Kathy Acker, Margaret Atwood, and Maryse Condé. close
