Postcolonialism and environmentalism stand united in their concern with and care for the oppressed, the voiceless, the invisible – be it the subaltern and the (post)colonial subject or the natural environment and non-human animals. Colonization and environmental degradation are closely intertwined and often go hand-in-hand. This seminar will explore this interrelation and ask how postcolonialism’s focus on the human subject and ecocriticism’s focus on the non-human environment can be mutually instructive.
Please purchase the following novels: Arundhati Roy, The God of Small Things, Yann Martel, Life of Pi, Amitav Ghosh, The Hungry Tide, and Romesh Gunesekera, Reef. The first text we will be discussing is The God of Small Things.
