Gods, monsters, superheroes and lovers: themes from Iranian mythology and Indo-Persian literature The Iranian as well as Iranian-influenced myths and stories about superheroes, kings, monsters and lovers are still today of great attraction and effectiveness in Iranian art and literature. They bring up the central problems and sensitivities of mankind with regard to the political and cultural questions in the world. They reflect the attitudes of the society to which they first belonged and reflect the dreams, confrontations and further development of the Iranian collective memory. The course will present selected examples of literary figures and themes, taking into account the cultural conceptions and existential questions contained in them, as well as investigating their functions and achievements and reception in Iranian art and literature up to the present. Overview presentations, which are given on the basis of a wealth of ancient and modern text and image sources with a focus on character types and genres, serve to underpin the basic knowledge conveyed. Texts from religious studies, literature and art studies form the theoretical background. close
