SoSe 20: Comparing Media Systems
Carola Richter
Comments
In this seminar students will comparatively analyze media systems of several countries against the background of theoretically derived dimensions of media system comparison. By describing media policies, ownership structures and cultural specifics of the media and communication patterns, students will get comprehensive knowledge on theories and methodologies of comparing media systems. Furthermore, the course focuses mainly on countries in non-Western regions of the world such as the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America, thus providing information about under-researched media systems. The analysis of the respective media systems will be embedded in different theoretical and conceptual approaches to the comparison of media systems.
Besides reading academic texts, an eLearning platform (www.areacore.org/ims) will be a main source for students and an output platform for their research results.
