Comments
Description:
This seminar introduces students to the range of theoretical and historical studies on theories of empire. During the last two decades a new discussion on state formation and empire has emerged. This literature has created an understanding of empire as the politics of multi-culturalism, rule of law, and administrative decentralization and privatization. This new scholarship, also tried to analyze not only western colonialism but also classical empires like Russia, Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empire; however the discussions on the late Ottoman Empire were very limited. In this seminar, based on the theoretical readings and online discussions we will try to develop a critical perspective on Ottoman governing practices of the comparative political geographies with a particular attention to concepts of empire and imperial politics in the late 19. Century Ottoman Empire.
Information on the format of the class:
Due to the pandemic, this class will be taught online only. As it will take place under exceptional circumstances, over the course semester this experimental course aims to create a learning/teaching structure that will involve flexible and supportive solutions via online teaching. This seminar was initially planned as a usual class with weekly meetings, therefore, I decided to use synchronous course sessions hosted via Zoom or Webex and written responses. The students who are in a different time-zones or having dramatic changes in their daily life because of the pandemic (infected or have to offer care work to the family members) or don’t have a good internet connection for digital access to the class discussions should write in advance to me. (I’ll schedule video meetings or chat with them in every two weeks or we can find another solution, which is based on writing discussions via blackboard). I strongly encourage you to contact me at any time if you feel the class is not working for you.
Participation: All participants are required to do the following: 1) participation to the class via Zoom or WebEx (exceptional circumstances have to be informed to me); 2) readings (every week you have required and additional readings); 3) reading responses (100 words); 4) engage online discussions; 4) other minor tasks that might be necessary as we move forward.
All participants can contact with me during the Office hours to meet me online individually for a short conversation bout the seminar. Finally, for those of you who want to do an exam, i.e. get a “module grade” in this class: In addition to the requirements, you will write a seminar paper within the framework of the topics discussed in class. close
