Wolfram Keller Lea von der Linde
Comments
The aim of this lecture is to familiarise students with English Literature from Old English via Middle English to Early Modern English. At the beginning of the semester, we will briefly introduce students to questions of periodization, medieval cultural history, and language.
Subsequently, we will discuss various canonical Old English and Middle English texts covering different medieval genres as well as theoretical approaches, such as Postcolonial Studies, Gender Studies, and New Historicism. Apart from providing a general overview, we will read and discuss passages of selected texts in greater detail in order to practice and further expand students’ interpretive skills.
At the end of the semester, we will discuss some Early Modern works with a view to the ways they respond to - but also construct –the medieval.
