Sabine Schülting
Comments
What we call ‘English literature’ is a broad field of study which encompasses texts from Anglophone countries around the world. It is continuously evolving, as new novels, poems and plays as well as formerly unknown authors are added to the ‘canon’. The lecture series will offer an overview of the main periods of English Literature from the medieval and the early modern ages, via the ‘long eighteenth century’, Romanticism, Victorianism, to Modernism, Postcolonial and Postmodernism. Through this introduction to literary history, the lecture series will provide the basis for more specific courses on selected genres, epochs or topics in the literature modules of the BA programme. The course will be team-taught.
Texts will be provided by the respective lecturers and will be uploaded on Blackboard. Introductory reading: Paul Poplawski (ed.), English Literature in Context. 2nd edition (Cambridge University Press 2017).
