SoSe 20: Sociological Theories and Methodologies

ONLINE COURSE ----- This is the second part of the Introduction to Sociology course held during the Winter semester 2019/2020. This seminar is intended to review and build on top of the materials discussed from previous semester. Although “Introduction to Sociology” course is not required, the students who have not yet taken the course are expected to familiarize themselves with the materials and class discussions. The course is designed with four main themes concerning American society and culture: 1) Early American sociology; 2) Recent development of sociology over the years; 3) Topics in Everyday Life; 4) Case study and application of theoretical tools we discuss in the first part of the lecture. 1) Early American sociology will be an extended three-part session from the brief introduction we had last semester. With a session dedicated on Jane Addams and social work in American society, it will be a mix of review and new elements of early American sociology we skipped last semester; 2) Recent development of sociology over the years; 3) With greater focus on W.E.B Dubois and race theory in America, we will study major sociopolitical, economic and cultural issues in American society; 4) Case study
