SoSe 21: The challenges of citizenship and nation-building in Africa

Nathalie Raunet

Comments

This seminar looks at the origins of legal citizenship in Africa, its instrumentalization in politics, and its impact on people. This will lead us to think about the nature of citizenship as a Western concept, and to what extent it contributes to building the nation in Africa. The seminar is structured thematically and addresses the connections of citizenship to the state, elections, autochthony, ethnicity and post-colonial theory. Weekly case-studies will be analysed in connection with these themes, to which students will be asked to participate. close
