SoSe 21: Quantitative Methods in Autocracy Research

Alexander Libman

Comments

The class aims to combine a brief introduction into the quantitative research in modern social sciences with the discussion of specific problems quantitative political science faces while studying authoritarian regimes. In the first part of the class, we will briefly review main concepts and tools of quantitative social sciences, paying particular attention to the modern ‘experimentalist’ approaches emphasizing causal identification. In the second part, we discuss the problems of data availability in authoritarian regimes (as well as how they can be turned into advantages for researchers), the topic of electoral forensics, as well possibilities for combining qualitative and quantitative research in autocracies. The class will be accompanied by the discussion of practical examples of studying authoritarian regimes using quantitative methods. close
