SoSe 21: The Politics of Social Policy and Control
Laura Isabell Kettel
Comments
This course will introduce students to social policy and the concepts of social control and poverty governance. The first part of the course provides an overview of U.S. social policy: we consider what policies fall under that umbrella, current debates on the provision of benefits, the role of government in providing welfare, and the evolution of social policy and welfare provision in the United States. In the second part of the course, we will engage critically with constructions of target populations, including (racialized) narratives of deservingness, concepts of paternalism and social control, and examine different systems of poverty governance in the United States. The class will be held virtually via WebEx.
