SoSe 21: The politics of market integration

Julia Langbein

Comments

Most attempts to integrate markets face the challenge to integrate economies at different levels of development. This course introduces key concepts in international and comparative political economy and provides an overview about the debate linked to the effects of transnational market integration on development. We discuss under what conditions market integration distributes gains and losses among participating countries unevenly and decreases the room for development in peripheral economies. We pay special attention to the politics of the Single European Market to understand EU strategies for managing developmental diversity and their effects on development space in the Southern and Eastern member states as well as in the EU’s Eastern neighbours. Finally, we will summarize the lessons learned for managing diversity in and beyond Europe. close
