SoSe 21: PS-Medieval English Literatures: Medieval Scottish Literature
Wolfram Keller
Comments
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the literature written in
medieval Scotland. Following a short survey of Scottish cultural history and
Anglo-Scottish relations, we shall read and analyse several short texts by Scottish
writers such as Robert Henryson, William Dunbar, Gavin Douglas, and others. The
focus of our discussions will be on how these authors represent Scottish history and
culture, how they conceptualize the ‘North’, and how they respond to the literature
South of the border. In-class discussions shall be mainly focused on the primary
texts, occasionally supplemented by short articles. Further information about the
syllabus, readings, and assessment shall be available on Blackboard at the beginning
of the semester. close
