SoSe 21: PS- History of English II: Semantic change
Stefan Thim
Comments
In this class we will focus on semantic developments in the English lexicon from the beginnings to the present day. Beyond the history of individual words and the development of lexical fields, we will also look at general principles of semantic change, at relations between language and culture, and at the role of semantic change in the emergence of grammar and its relation to pragmatics.
Participants will thus become familiar with central issues in English historical semantics and they will be able to pursue individual research questions in these areas. Consequently the class will also include a recapitulation of some basic language history, but also an introduction to historical lexicography and to the competent use of research tools.
