In this lecture, we will focus on the Internet core and the deployment of its applications. We will introduce methods to measure and assess network protocols and network architectures. The topics of this lecture are embedded in a practical context. For example, we will discuss how the current peering ecosystem works and why it is challenging to measure it. You will better understand how to quantify the deployment of common and upcoming protocols (e.g., IPv6, DNSSEc, HTTP/2). We will also discuss how to process large-scale Internet data sets efficiently. We will discuss important application fields of Internet measurements, with a special focus on network security and performance.
In addition to the lecture, we will offer lab exercises. In these exercises, you will conduct your own measurements and analyze existing data sets.
