In this course, we want to approach the cultural encounter between the Arab "Orient" and the European West based on translated texts from Arabic literature. This ranges from texts from the 10th century to the time of the crusaders, the 19th century, the early 20th century and today. There are travel reports, but also novels and satirical depictions that show us Europe from a completely different perspective and that also show the changes in the relationship between the Middle East and Europe. From a theoretical point of view, we want to deal with concepts such as cultural contact, orientalism and “Nahda”. close
