SoSe 21: Social Stratification in Comparative Perspective
Misun Lim, Rebecca Wetter
Comments
This seminar explores contemporary research in the field of social stratification. The course focuses on relatively recent research, and is intended to introduce you to many of the major themes and findings in this area. The readings and class discussion are designed to expose students to a broad range of influential pieces in the social stratification literature. In particular, we will study inequality through: pay for work, race, ethnicity, gender, family, intergenerational mobility, education, social capital, welfare states, and rising income inequality.
You should leave this course with a good, basic understanding of contemporary research on social stratification. This will require reading the materials assigned for class, posing questions about these topics, and engaging in complex discussions about the course materials. You will also learn how to develop your research questions. You will submit a final paper (of roughly 3,000 words) or pass an oral exam (30 minutes) focused on some element of social stratification by the end of the spring semester. close
