Comments

Love poetry of the Umayyad period (ghazal) comprises one of the most significant and rich fields of Arabic literary study. The ghazal, in its various styles, is centrally important both to the comprehension of the development of the aesthetics and form of classical Arabic poetry, and to the apprehension of early Islamic history. In this course, we will read canonical texts of Ghazal poetry and discuss these texts in the context of the political, social, and religious history of the early Islamic and Umayyad period. close
