SoSe 21: Urban Cultures – Damascus and Baghdad

Based on selected classical Arabic texts, this course offers an introduction to daily life, politics, religion and scholarship in the Islamic metropolises of Damascus and Baghdad in the medieval period. By reading and translating excerpts from chronicles, city descriptions, travelogues, biographies and other texts, participants will also gain insights into a number of key genres of classical Islamic culture. close
