The course will initially focus on a survey of Semitic languages, including their classification, and an introduction to Semitic studies as a discipline. We will then turn to a number of exemplary inscriptions in the Northwest Semitic languages, emphasizing the shared linguistic background and literary features in these inscriptions. Students will gain experience and methodological awareness about applying both philological and linguistic methods to ancient Semitic texts through this course. close
