This course is an introduction to the rich exegetical literature that has grown around the Qur'an in the Arabic tradition. In this course we will read closely examples of representative works in order to gain a better understanding of the history and development of Tafsir as a genre, a discipline and a method. Besides selections from Tafsir literature, we shall also read materials from several other traditional philological genres concerned with the Qur’an, including: Ma?ani, Gharib, Qira?at, I?jaz. close
