Comments

The seminar focuses on current digitalization trends in authoritarian China. Early sessions introduce students to the study of authoritarian politics before turning to analysis of the form of digital authoritarianism emerging in China. Focus then turns to examination of spe-cific cases from which to understand the complex phenomenon of digitalization, including AI policies, specific instruments such as facial recognition technologies and social credit, and case studies of smart cities in China. The seminar aims to enable students to gain a nu-anced understanding of recent developments in China and critically debate their social, po-litical, environmental and economic implications. close
