SoSe 21: Photographing Culture: Anthropology and Image-making
Nena Hedrick
Comments
This practical seminar deals with questions of sensorial representations of culture through visual methods. Within the context of the current global pandemic, we will explore options for carrying out multisensory research within the confines of restricted access, including desktop documentaries, mobile, lofi, and virtual visual ethnography. With a brief technical introduction to the basics of photography and an overview of the diverse approaches to image-making in the field of anthropology, we will address the following questions. How can anthropology benefit from a turn toward the visual in physically distanced research? How can we approach sensorial ethnography in times of limited sensory experiences? How can one convey the sensorial through the visual?
In this course students develop their own photo series, or alternative limited visual project, which will be developed through feedback sessions with the cohort, readings on theory and methods, and examples of still and moving images close
