Comments
This seminar aims to explore migration and displacement as gendered phenomena. Gender interplays with migration and displacement at various levels. The reasons of migration, the conditions of flight and mobility, the experiences of transit, encampment and resettlement change drastically on gendered terms. Gender also affects migration patterns and experiences at several scales. Consider global care migration or the International Organization for Migration’s gender directives. Alternatively consider the neighborhoods where new migrants land, and the relations there. Migration also brings forth encounters with different gender prescriptions and changes in notions of hegemonic masculinities and femininities.
Hence from representations to policy making, from embodiment to surveillance industries, it is not possible to truly investigate migration and displacement without accounting for gender. Within this very large realm, we will focus on a select few themes:
- Home-making
- Migrant reception and arrival infrastructures
- Care migration
- Environmental displacement
- Re-thinking masculinities
- Future-making
