This seminar introduces students to the range of theoretical and historical studies on collective and state violence, focusing on political violence, during the late Ottoman Empire. In the last two decades a new discussion on political violence and Ottoman Empire has emerged. History of political violence, which implicates non-state armed groups, inter-communal conflicts, state violence, rebellions, and acts of terror will be discussed on a trans-imperial level. This seminar will examine the actors, their networks, and the structure of different kinds of political violence. The course will offer different inter-disciplinary approaches to explain the violence in different cases, contexts and in different geographies of the Empire. close
