SoSe 21: Religion and Development in Global History

Recently, a transdisciplinary research field focusing on the relationship of religion and development has emerged. At the same time, international development policy has recognized religious communities to be crucial stakeholders for development cooperation. In historical perspective, religion and development are intertwined in manifold ways: religious tenets can be conducive to or hinder specific aspects of development; religious communities are large-scale social service providers; religious notions influence dominant concepts of development; and religious mission movements formed part of colonialist modernizing agendas, just to name a few examples. The seminar will bring together students of history and theology/religion and culture to jointly engage with the relationship of religion and development in modern history. close
