SoSe 21: A House Divided: Polarization in the US

This course examines?polarization in the United States. Focusing on a series of thematic case studies, we will examine the origins of polarization and its impact on democracy at various critical juncture points. Drawing on insights from American history, sociology, and political science the course surveys the structural, cultural, and racial dimensions of a house divided. The course is particularly attentive to?the role of partisan social identity; and the perennial struggle over belonging in the American story.?Major themes include the application and use of social science methods; Congress and the Supreme Court; party (re)alignment; dog-whistle politics; social sorting and the culture wars; economic inequality; new-identity politics; and the crisis of American democracy.
