The seminar explores the evolution of the monetary and banking system in the United States and the ways in which the system interacted with the major economic and political forces of the time. Topics covered include, among others, money and banking in colonial times, the creation and liquidation of the First and Second Bank of the United States, the Free Banking Era, the post-Civil War dual banking system, bimetallism and the ``free silver'' movement, the major U.S. banking panics including the panic of 1907, the foundation of the Federal Reserve System, the Great Depression, and the financial crisis of 2007-08. close
