This course will consider the varying literary perceptions of Europe from the perspective of those crossing her borders. Exilic literature will be read alongside European intellectual thought and travelogues to trace the varying conceptions of borders & homeland, and to investigate the ways literature negotiates life’s possibilities, endeavours and imagined realities. Please read Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s letters, dated from 8th Aug 1716 to 1st Nov 1718, before the course starts. close
