“?adith ?Isa ibn Hisham”, composed by Mu?ammad al-Muwayli?i (d. 1930), epitomizes a significant moment in the history of Arabic language and literature. A portrait of a turbulent and changing time in late nineteenth-century Egypt, the work combines both classical and modern registers of style, choice of lexicon and syntactical structures. Through a close reading of the work we will examine linguistic and literary developments in the Arabic language at the turn of the century. Its lively dialogues offer a good opportunity for students to immerse in the narrative, role-play and improve their comprehension and communication skills. close
