SoSe 22: Gender Studies und Postkolonialer Feminismus

The recent uprisings in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region since 2010 have resurfaced the role of women in socio-political debates and in feminist struggles in important ways. As the uprisings have locally dismantled the patriarchal, postcolonial, and military dominated states, it also resurfaced globally questions of feminist struggles in context of imperialism, capitalism, and globalization. The deep neoliberal restructuring programs implemented in the MENA region since at least the 1980s, imbedded the region more firmly in the global Capitalist order which in turn has a great impact on women’s everyday lives, at home and in finding labor which in turn has informed feminist political struggles.
The seminar is dived into three main parts. The course will start with a basic understating of feminist debates in postcolonial contexts and delve into questions of ‘whiteness’ and who represents women. Section two will be dedicated to a critical approach to understanding the MENA region and its uprisings in context of capitalism and imperialism. Looking particularly at neoliberal reform programs in the region and its impact on women’s lived experiences, in this section, women and work in addition to women’s labor struggles and counter strategies will be highlighted. Finally, in the third section, we will analyze and investigate gender and politics in the Middle East considering the recent uprisings. Schließen
