SoSe 22: Politics and Generations
Philippe Joly
Kommentar
In the media and the academic literature, people often refer to generations to explain contemporary political phenomena. But what are generations? How can we study them? What are their political manifestations? These are the main questions we will address in this seminar. We will start by contrasting different concepts of generations. We will then discuss different theoretical approaches that aim at explaining how citizens acquire stable political identities, values, and behavior. We will focus on theories of political socialization and their key concept, the impressionable years, while also considering alternative approaches such as the family transmission of social status. In terms of methods, we will discuss methodological challenges associated with the study of generations, in particular the age-period-cohort identification problem. In the last part of the seminar, we will move on to more specific topics such as generational differences in political participation, the legacies of authoritarianism on political attitudes, and the consequences of generational replacement on public policies. The seminar is structured around the discussion of influential texts and integrates practical activities with quantitative data.
