Labor markets are places that generated inequalities not only in terms of individuals’ working life but also beyond (like inequality in health, family formation, political participation). Yet, research has shown that, though labor market opportunities (e.g., in terms of non-employment risks, income, occupational position) are unequally distributed between social groups in all countries, the extent of labor market inequalities varies between countries. In this seminar, we will review studies on the causes of labor market inequalities in different phases of the working life (school-to-work transitions, prime-age working time, and retirement transitions) in advanced societies. For these working-life phases, we will discuss if, and why, determinants of inequality like gender, educational attainment and migration background are associated with labor market inequalities – and how institutional country differences moderate their impact. The learning goals of the seminar are to acquire knowledge of key concepts/theories and of quantitative approaches for causal analyses.

This seminar will be dedicated to in-depth discussions of the week’s readings, including the statistical analyses to improve your scholarly skills in analytical, methodological and statistical reasoning. “Active participation” in the discussions is expected. Schließen
