SoSe 22: US Foreign Policy, Economic Statecraft, and World Order
Elisabeth Winter
Kommentar
Competing for global dominance, great powers measure their influence in military and in economic terms. This course introduces the concept of economic statecraft, i.e., the use of economic means to pursue foreign policy goals. Part I of the course addresses theoretical and historical questions of economic statecraft. After introducing its role in U.S. foreign policy, evaluating its meaning for power politics, and defining instruments of economic statecraft, the course provides an overview of the history of U.S. economic statecraft. Part II consists of several case studies of contemporary economic statecraft. Among others, the course will assess U.S. economic statecraft and its different instruments used towards Iran, North Korea, China, and South Africa; but also discuss geoeconomic approaches of the European Union, China, and others. A main case will also be the Russian war against Ukraine and its geoeconomic implications. Schließen
