This seminar delves into the politics of infrastructure through various methodological approaches and empirical sites in the city. The presence, absence, failures, and decay of infrastructure fundamentally shape our lives and regulate our access to resources, opportunities, and power. But how do we understand infrastructure and its enduring capacity to inform the way we live? In this seminar, we examine how infrastructure functions as both an ordering and disordering of life in cities, protracting uneven geographies in which some are connected and provided for while others experience disconnection and marginalisation. Through close engagement with socio-technical networks of transport, water, sanitation, waste, and information and media in various cities, our focus lies in understanding the material relations of territory, ecology, colonialism, authority, citizenship, subjectivity, and collective action embedded in and woven through these infrastructural frames.
Objectives:
• To introduce key themes in critical and postcolonial urban theory, STS approach to 'infrastructural turn' in SS research, and theories of space and place
• To understand substantive issues related to infrastructure, politics, and global inequalities
• To explore the highly differentiated geographies of infrastructural provision and how they relate to socio-political hierarchical structures of race, class, gender, and colonialism.
• To develop our skills in critical thinking, communication, research, and academic writing. Schließen
