SoSe 22: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies: Cultural Representations of the Northern Irish

From 1968 – 1998 Northern Ireland was shaken by a conflict between Irish Catholics who were adamant to restore civil rights for their community, Protestant Unionist who defended the status-quo and the British army who initially should have ensured peace between the two communities but became quickly involved in the conflict. The violent escalation of the conflict led to a variety of artistic responses over the decades, which attempted to represent the conflict and commemorate its victims.
This seminar will focus on the various ways the Northern Irish conflict is represented in cultural expressions in Ireland. Students will explore how pivotal moments that took place in the conflict context are represented in film, literature and street art. By doing so, students will gain an insight into how the Northern Irish conflict continues to shape the cultural identities and collective memories of the conflicted communities in Northern Ireland despite the end of the armed conflict in 1998.
Students will be required to participate regularly and actively engage in class discussions. The final exam will be in form of a 2000-word term paper. A reader for the seminar will be provided on Blackboard.
