This course traces the history of immigration to the United States beginning in the early twentieth century until the present day. We will examine the reasons, contexts and consequences that led various groups to immigrate to the U.S. In particular, the course will focus on how race, ethnicity, nationality, gender and sexuality, religion, disability, and socioeconomic status have shaped the immigrant experience. We will also look at how these categories continue to influence American debates and perceptions about immigration. The course will utilize a wide variety of primary sources including news media, literature, visual arts, and music to enhance our understanding of the immigrant experience. Schließen
