SoSe 22: Societal polarization in a comparative perspective

A widespread narrative about the current state of Western democratic societies is one of polarization. According to that narrative, societies are increasingly torn apart because there are unbridgeable differences in attitudes towards important political issues within the population. But are claims about opinion polarization well founded in empirical studies? This seminar provides an overview on empirical and theoretical work on opinion polarization in the populations of Western democratic countries. (1) We start by discussing the concept of opinion polarization and how we can operationalize it for empirical investigation. (2) Equipped with this conceptual knowledge, we then read and discuss research on opinion differences on one of the most contested issues of our times: immigration. (3) Furthermore, we discuss possible explanations for opinion polarization, including the widespread use of social media or a possible rural-urban divide. (4) Finally, we discuss specific forms of polarization such as polarization between identity groups (affective polarization) and polarization between political elites and parties. Schließen
