SoSe 22: Understanding Collective Emotions: Conflict, Culture and Contestation

With his concept of “effervescence”, a form of collective exaltation in rituals, Emile Durkheim introduced the topic of collective emotions to sociology. Although research on collective emotions has been dormant for some time, it has become much more prominent in recent decades. Collective emotions are emotions which are experienced, at the same time, by a larger number of individuals with regard to a common object, act, or event. Collective outrage at protests or gatherings, collective joy at concerts or festivities, or collective grief at national commemorations are examples at hand. These examples already indicate that collective emotions have a twofold nature: on the one hand, they are vital sources of solidarity, collective identity, and cohesion; on the other hand, they fuel conflict, antagonisms, and social exclusion.
The aim of this seminar is to achieve a sound understanding (a) of collective emotions, (b) of how they arise in specific social and cultural contexts, and (c) of their individual and social consequences. To this end, students will learn about key theoretical ideas in research on collective emotions (including ideas from philosophy and social psychology) and about a number of empirical studies that have investigated both, the role of collective emotions in social cohesion and in social conflict.
