SoSe 22: MÜ-Medieval English Literatures: Medieval Antiquities

This tutorial is meant to provide some historical and literary backgrounds for the study of the medieval reception of classical antiquity in general and for the medieval reception of narratives of the Trojan War in particular. A short introduction to theories of periodization and temporalities will be followed by sessions engaging with the ways in which medieval works responded to antecedent traditions, especially with a view to the Troy story and to narratives about Alexander the Great, the two narrative traditions that constitute the insular reception and transformation of the so-called ‘Matte of Rome’.
