SoSe 22: (S) Archaeological illustrations in the creation and dissemination of knowledge about past contexts, archaeological remains and interpretation
Micale Maria Gabriella
Kommentar
The seminar will investigate the informative nature of graphic documentation in archaeological scholarly publications (including drawings and photos) as well as its role in the creation and dissemination of knowledge about contexts and their interpretation. The classes will provide an historical overview on the development of methods, theories and practices as documented in both archival unpublished materials (including field notes and sketches) and scholarly publications. Selected case studies, relevant for our understanding of the archaeology of the ancient Near East, will include not only the documentation and presentation of architectural remains, but also of artefacts and material culture.
The seminar will enable students 1) to read the images produced to document and illustrate the archaeology of the ancient Near East; 2) to understand what an image communicates that a text doesn’t; 3) and to be prepared to produce archaeological images being aware of the power these images have to project their research and to convey their interpretations.
