Genia Kostka und Sarah Eaton (HU)
Kommentar
This seminar offers a detailed examination of mainland China’s efforts to achieve „green transformation”. We begin with an exploration of the concept of the anthropocene and what it implies for state leaders’ dreams of sustainable development. With these insights in mind, we then turn to a close look at key elements of China’s climate and environmental politics. The course has the following goals:
• To introduce current academic and policy debate about a.) viable sustainability pathways and green transformations for countries, and b.) the relative merits of democratic and authoritarian forms of government in achieving sustainability
• To introduce students to the key features of China’s “environmental authoritarianism,” a key reference point in global debate about approaches to sustainability
• To develop students’ skills of oral argument and debate in English
