SoSe 22: Introduction to Medical Anthropology
Ursula Probst
Kommentar
Perceptions, experiences, and practices related to illness, healing and health are culturally shaped and at the same time embedded in economic and socio-political relationships. This course introduces students to seminal texts and core concepts of medical anthropology and discusses how the sub-discipline has developed in different regional traditions of social and cultural anthropology. We will explore and critically discuss different approaches, such as interpretative medical anthropology, critical medical anthropology, and applied medical anthropology, and how they have influenced anthropological engagements with health, healing and illness. Furthermore, we look at different meanings and interpretations of central concepts like health, healing, illness, biomedicine, medical pluralism, care, and body in diverse sociocultural contexts. Lastly, we will discuss how medical anthropology and medical anthropologists engage with questions of Gender, contemporary developments and challenges for the sub-discipline such as increasing digitalisation, transnational mobilities of people, ideas and technologies, humanitarian intervention, and pandemics.
