As the current COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates, dealing with infectious disease requires bodies of knowledge that by far exceed the disciplinary boundaries of biology and biomedicine. Throughout this seminar, participants will develop a genuinely anthropological perspective on how profoundly communicable diseases such as COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Ebola or Tuberculosis are shaped by biosocial processes and political-economic conditions. The students will be acquainted with relevant theoretical discussions around notions such as Cultural Epidemiology, Infectious Disease Syndemics, biosecurity, interspecies relations, and the pharmaceuticalization of public/global health. Drawing on these insights, they will critically reflect on what anthropology’s unique contribution can be to a better understanding of the emergence, prevention, and response to infectious diseases and pandemic threats in an ever-more interconnected world.
